Welcome to the home page of Origin, the Darwin College Drama Society. Darwin is one of the youngest colleges of the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

[The Story of our Origins]

Once upon a time a group of students from Darwin decided that they wanted to be involved in something very special outside of their studies. They decided to form a drama society. ‘The Darwin Drama Society’ was held together over the years by a certain beloved character, a long standing member of the college. He was a common sight at college discos with his red shirt and colourful expression, dancing the night away.

At the last disco we danced with him, in spirit at least, because we wanted to invest some of that energy into our lives. We raised our glasses and made toasts to King Solomon. On the suggestion of a beautiful woman who loves aerobics, football and the boat club, we voted to call our drama group ORIGIN.

We wanted to extend the dream of a certain French Canadian who may be quoted as saying ‘Let us call this year zero for our floor . . . History begins now!!!’ He was talking about the floor he was living on, and the people he was living with, not the whole of Darwin or the rest of the world. The dream was a modest one.

But the important thing was to have it because in the words of a very dear neighbour and friend: "the problem is not that dreams do not come true it is that people do not have dreams." People do not have dreams in a brave new world

Lent Term 1996

We are now at the end of the Lent Term. Good vacations to everyone and see you back for the Easter Term.

PREVIOUS EVENTS

During the Michaelmas (1996) term, Origin has shown "The Physicists" by Durrenmatt. This was indeed very apt for a college that has such a wealth of theoretical physicists, biochemists and other scientists. We even made a few adaptations to the script (and music) to make it suitable for a Darwin audience. We wanted it to speak to you all.

Synopsis of the Play
The Cast of Characters
A Review of the Darwin showing

The play was a success in more than one sense, and the turn-out, both from Darwin College members as well as from people from all walks of Cambridge, was impressive. All tickets were sold out in advance. Because of this, it is being considered to re-do the play at a different venue. Please keep checking at this page for more news of this.
